Trupanion offers one comprehensive plan that covers pet accidents and illnesses with no breed, gender or age restrictions. You can enroll your pet any time before age 14 and coverage will not decrease as your pet ages. This policy includes coverage for medical procedures and treatment costs related to accidents, chronic illnesses, congenital conditions and hereditary conditions.
Trupanion also offers three add-on packages for an extra cost each month:
- Recovery and Complementary Care: Covers your pet’s rehabilitative and non-clinical treatments, like acupuncture and hydrotherapy.
- Pet Owner Assistance: Includes coverage for non-medical costs such as pet burial or cremation and boarding.
- Breeding: This rider covers costs related to pet breeding.
Trupanion does not have any pet wellness care plans.
Trupanion Coverage Exclusions
Like most other pet insurance providers, Trupanion will not cover your pet’s pre-existing conditions or conditions that develop before your policy starts. Trupanion also excludes wellness care, exam fees and coverage for birds and exotic animals.
Trupanion covers hip dysplasia conditions as long as they aren’t pre-existing.
Also like all insurance providers, Trupanion extends waiting periods before your coverage officially kicks in. After you purchase a policy, you must wait five days to submit an accident claim and 30 days for illness claims.
How Much Does Trupanion Cost?
Based on our sample quotes, Trupanion costs $70 per month for dogs and $40 for cats.
Trupanion is one of the pricier pet insurance providers on the market due to its lack of plan customizability. Most providers allow you to adjust your deductible, reimbursement rate and yearly limit, but Trupanion only lets you customize your deductible, with choices ranging from $0 to $1,000. Trupanion plans always have a 90% reimbursement rate and unlimited coverage caps, which could make up for higher monthly premiums if your pet has frequent or costly vet visits.
Trupanion also has per-condition deductibles as opposed to annual copays, so you will only pay a deductible when your pet develops a new condition. The company also charges a $35 administrative fee at initial enrollment.
Trupanion Discounts
Trupanion offers a discount for registered service animals, but it doesn’t apply to emotional support animals and pets in Washington. The company also doesn’t provide a multi-pet discount for households with more than one furry family member.
But you can earn a referral bonus for recommending friends and family members to Trupanion.
